Gabapentin and pain medicine.
The researchers say people should be aware that many prescription drugs can interact with each other and have the potential to be unsafe or even deadly. (E.g. antidepressants, painkillers, antipsychotic drugs.)
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, many children in the U.S. are given prescription drugs without their parents' knowledge, while more than 50% of children take prescription painkillers by age 12.
If your child is starting on opioids, you should talk to your child's doctor before starting the medication.
Many parents don't speak up about the drugs they're giving to their children, but you can. Ask your doctor about any pain relievers, sleeping pills, or supplements your child is taking, especially if they're prescribed to help him sleep at night.
Children with ADHD, anxiety, or depression should be careful about taking prescription drugs, especially off-label use.
Children with a history of abuse or neglect should not receive benzodiazepine medications, such as Xanax or Klonopin without first speaking to their healthcare provider.
Children with epilepsy should always be monitored by parents or pediatrician, since sometimes these medications can worsen seizures. And although Xanax other benzodiazepines can reduce the chance of having an seizure, you may still have a seizure if you don't take regular pills or if your dose of a medication is very low. You should also speak to your pediatrician about seizures.
Do not stop taking these medications unless they have no longer worked for you. Your doctor will review individual situation to help you choose which medication is right for you. The Canadian Press
